Plant Performance Work – An ongoing investigation
Live performance work from online arts festival, 2020.
Medium: Plants rigged to be used as midi instruments trough arduino, audio samples generated from field recordings that have undergone various stages of human processing
The performance linked belowwas taken from a Box Moon Festival in June 2020 which all took place online due to restrictions. It was an attempted audio communication with the living things I had contact with during lockdowns, which were my house plants. All audio in this performance is created by my skin touching my plants, as we conduct electricity together when our circuits connect. The samples they play are manipulated from field recordings of the cistern and pipes in my bathroom. The idea was to create a strange soundscape based on the noises around me while locked inside, using the sounds of water which was a survival commonality between me and the plants I kept.
This performance formed the basis for a longstanding interest in the potentials for communication between human and the non-human, specifically with the plant world. This thread of investigation runs currently through my research.
